Augsburg – Schalke Predictions and Preview

  • Augsburg did what the mega-rich PSG couldn’t recently do by taking an early lead and scoring three times against Bayern Munich. Yet, the eventual 5-3 defeat in the Bavarian derby left Enrico Maaßen’s men in the lower echelons of the table, albeit with a seven-point cushion above the bottom-three after trading home wins with away losses in each passing round since the restart (W4, L5).
  • That’s a trend Augsburg will hope to continue here as they look to open up a ten-point gap to a relegation-threatened, yet resurgent, Schalke outfit. Whilst Augsburg maintain a perfect home league record in 2023, all of the victories have been by just a single-goal margin, and just one more victory will equal the club record of five straight Bundesliga home wins set at the tail-end of 2014.
  • The visitors are enjoying a good moment themselves despite their lowly 17th place, with a seven-game unbeaten run of league games (W2, D5) representing their longest since 2017. The Royal Blues are potentially just one victory away from escaping the drop zone for the first time since round eight, which is testament to the perseverance that former Augsburg player and now Schalke manager Thomas Reis has instilled in a previously struggling side that had just nine points after round 17.
  • Schalke remain one of only two Bundesliga teams, along with Revierderby rivals Dortmund, to remain unbeaten since the halfway point of the season, which includes three consecutive away clean sheets. Just one more shutout would see Schalke keep four straight travelling Bundesliga clean sheets for the first time since 2004, although they haven’t collected one here across their last six visits (W2, D3, L1).
  • Players to watch: Irvin Cardona could be knocking on the door for his full Augsburg debut after scoring against Bayern Munich in just his second appearance from the bench last round. Similarly, Kenan Karaman was the ‘super sub’ for Schalke last round as his second-half equaliser rescued a point in the 100th Bundesliga Revierderby.
  • Hot stat: Augsburg’s home league games have averaged just 0.67 goals per first half, compared with 1.67 per game after the half-time interval.
