The match between Frankfurt and Leipzig completes the 23rd matchday of the Bundesliga round and is also the first Monday match of this season. With both teams in Champions League qualification berths, and separated by only two points, this has a lot of potential for drama and action!
Both teams have reasons to be confident in this clash. Leipzig recently won two Bundesliga games in a row (for the first time since October) and Frankfurt have won two home games in a row for the first time in a year.
Leipzig have further reason to be confident, after an accomplished 3-1 first leg Europa League victory at Italian giants Napoli. While they will arrive in Frankfurt in good cheer, there is the underlying sense that fatigue may set in during the latter stages.
Nonetheless, Leipzig have scored in each of their last eight games, which is bad news for a and Frankfurt side that has conceded at least one goal in 90% of their home games this season.
In another good sign for Leipzig, last weekend marked the club’s 100th Bundesliga goal. The last time a team needed just 54 games to score a century was back in 1967 (BMG).
Players to watch: For Leipzig, Timo Werner (ten Bundesliga goals) is truly a feast for the eyes and he is currently in extremely good form. In the last Bundesliga match against Augsburg he was involved in 16 shots on target, way above Leipzig’s average.
Ante Rebic (Frankfurt) faces his former club as Frankfurt’s second-highest scorer so far this season with five goals.
Stat attack: So far, Leipzig have not suffered a defeat against Frankfurt since gaining promotion to the BL in 2016. In the previous three games against Frankfurt, Leipzig have won twice and drawn once.
Between them, the two sides have scored first in a combined total of 14 out of 16 games.

Derbies never require much context or build-up, but Torino and Juventus face-off in Serie A (SA) this weekend with a lot riding on the match for both sides.
Torino have improved under Walter Mazzarri and are knocking on the doors of European qualification, just two points off the top seven heading into the 25th round. There is the added incentive of throwing a spanner in the title hopes of Juventus in this ‘Turin Derby’!
Juventus remain just one point behind leaders Napoli and are wary of dropping points. The 2-2 draw against Tottenham in the Champions League was a disappointment, considering they were two goals up. With mounting injury concerns and a congested schedule, Juve have a tricky derby ahead.
Torino are unbeaten in their last seven league games (W3, D4), while their last 14 SA games have seen them lose only once (W5, D8). Their home record is even better, having picked up three consecutive wins.
Juve have won their last eight league matches and their last loss came in November at Sampdoria. That, incidentally, is their only away loss of the season in 12 games (31pts, W10, D1) with only Napoli (34pts) having a better record.
Key battles: Iago Falque (Torino) has two goals and four assists in his last five league games.
Gonzalo Higuain (Juventus) has eight goals in his last five games.
Stat attack: Juventus have kept a clean sheet in ten of their last 11 SA games.
Torino need a clean sheet to equal their longest SA streak (five) without conceding a home goal.
Juventus scored at least one goal in each of their 26 away league games.
Torino have managed just one point in their last seven meetings with Juve in all competitions and have just one win in their last 25 encounters (W19, D5).

Augsburg, placed seventh ahead of this round, welcome Stuttgart to the WWK Arena. The guests put some much needed distance between themselves and the relegation zone last round, but they are still entrenched in the relegation battle.
Augsburg lost away at RB Leipzig last round, but have been strong in front of their own fans in recent weeks (W3, D3). Stuttgart have seen a marked improvement in form recently – but only when playing at home. Away, they are still struggling (D2, L4), and will need to reverse that trend here with a positive result.
Speaking of form, these teams have both had similar results in their last five games (W2, D1, L2). In fact, just one goal separates them over the last matches. Augsburg have a goal difference of 5:5 whilst Stuttgart have a ratio of 5:6!
Even though they are seventh and just seven points behind second place, coach Manuel Baum has been reminding fans and players that survival is what it is all about for Augsburg: “When we have reached 40 points, then we will know that we are safe but for the moment we’re just thinking about the game ahead.”
Players to watch: With top scorer Alfred Finnbogason out with injury, the home fans will look to Michael Gregoritsch and hope the Austrian striker can build on his nine Bundesliga goals.
Stuttgart’s big name signing in January, Mario Gomez, scored his first goal in Stuttgart’s last away game. Can the big target man do it again for Die Roten?
Stat attack: Augsburg are unbeaten in eight games against Stuttgart (W7, D1), and at the WWK Arena they have now won four in a row.
Augsburg have scored 2+ goals in five out of 11 home matches so far, and have scored at least once in every one so far. Stuttgart, on their hand, have not kept a clean sheet in any away match so far.
To put Stuttgart’s away performances in perspective, of their 24 points so far this season only two have been won away from home!

Marseille and Bordeaux face-off in this round 26 closing game, in what should be a mouthwatering clash between two in-form sides of Ligue 1 (L1).
In 54 previous meetings at the Stade Velodrome, Marseille have won 29, Bordeaux have won five, and the other 20 matchups were drawn. Furthermore, the Olympians remain unbeaten in their last ten encounters against their upcoming opponent in all competitions (W5, D5, L0).
After two straight victories against Metz (6-3) and Ligue 2 side Bourg-Péronnas in the Coupe de France (0-9), Marseille drew 2-2 at home against St Etienne, land currently find themselves third in the L1 standings. Competing in the Europa League this week, Rudy Garcia’s men trounced Braga 3-0 at home in the first leg.
On-fire Bordeaux have a record of four straight wins in the league championship and currently sit seventh in the L1 table. Indeed, Gus Poyet’s side are the form-team and have defeated Nantes (0-1), Lyon (3-1), Strasbourg (0-2) and Amiens (3-2).
The question on everyone’s lips is – can Bordeaux be the first team to beat Marseille in 2018?
Players to watch: With 14 goals and ten assists, Marseille’s French international midfielder Florian Thauvin has been directly involved in 43% of his team’s 55 goals. He has further highlighted his recent form by scoring four goals in his last three matches in all competitions.
Thauvin will go head-to-head with 20-year-old Brazilian striker Malcom, who is also in outstanding form this season with eight goals and six assists. However, he has scored only once in his last eight league matches.
Stat attack: Marseille are undefeated in 19 of their last 20 L1 matches (W13, D6, L1), scoring at least two goals in each of their last seven. Rudi Garcia’s men have the highest average of shots per home match in the league (17.7).
Bordeaux have been winning at both half-time and full-time in their last four matches in the top flight. Moreover, they are on a run of three straight league away wins.

Lille are battling in the depths of the Ligue 1 (L1) standings going into this round 26 encounter – only one point above the relegation zone. Conversely, Lyon are still in the running for a Champion’s League qualification place.
In 44 previous meetings at the Stade Pierre-Mauroy, Lille have won 25, Lyon have claimed eight victories and the other 11 matches were drawn
With only one win recorded in their last five fixtures in the league, Lille still sit 16th in the standings. After unsurprisingly losing 3-0 at home to high-flying PSG in round 24, Christophe Galtier’s side reacted well bringing back a good point from their trip to Nantes last weekend (2-2).
Lyon are on a disappointing run of three straight losses in L1 – 3-1 to Bordeaux, 3-2 to Monaco and 2-0 against Rennes at home last Sunday. Currently fourth in the L1 table, Bruno Génésio’s men reacted well in the Europa League this week beating in-form Villarreal 3-1 in front of their supporters. Could we see them reap revenge on their hosts for the 2-1 win last time out?
Players to watch: The 22-year-old Dutch striker Anwar El-Ghazi has four goals and four assists in L1 and has been directly involved in 34% of Lille’s 23 goals.
Lyon’s best player so far this season has been Nabil Fekir who has 16 goals and five assists in L1. The 24-year-old proved his recent form by finding the net eight times in his last 11 matches in all competitions.
Stat attack: Lille have lost only one of their last nine home clashes against Lyon in the top flight (W5, D3, L1). There have been at least three goals scored in their last three home league games.
Lyon are the best away attack in the league with 31 goals scored so far. Consequently, they have scored at least two goals in nine of their last ten away matches in the league.
