Match Preview

After their defeat to France on matchday two (4-0), Iceland (FIFA rank: #40) welcome Albania (#62) to Reykjavik for the first H2H competitive fixture since the 2014 World Cup (WC) qualifying. Iceland won both games against Albania in that campaign via a 2-1 scoreline.
Despite enjoying great success this decade by becoming the smallest nation by population to appear at a WC finals as well as reaching the quarter-final stage of Euro 2016, Iceland have gone off the boil recently, winning just one of their last 17 matches (all games – W1, D6, L10). Notably, Iceland conceded at least twice in 82.35% of those matches (2.29 per match average), including every defeat.
Not the most prolific of sides, Albania have failed to even find the net in five of their last seven outings (W2, D1, L4). Moreover, they failed to register an away goal in their recent UEFA Nations League campaign, losing both games 2-0.
Although the visitors did beat the similarly-ranked Turkey away from home recently in a friendly (#39), they haven’t beaten another team of Iceland’s ilk away from home in a competitive game since a 3-0 victory away to Serbia (#29) in their last Euro qualifying campaign, curiously also on matchday three (D1, L3 since).
Players to watch: By far Iceland’s most valuable asset, Gylfi Sigurðsson has just enjoyed his best-ever Premier League scoring season (13 goals) – four from outside the box.
The only goalscorer who started on the pitch in Albania’s last victory was Armando Sadiku – he scored the opening goal last time out for both club (Lugano) and country.
Stat attack: Iceland have failed to win five of the last six matches in which they took a lead (W1, D4, L1).
Iceland have won three of the four all-time competitive H2Hs, scoring exactly two goals in each victory.
Ten of Albania’s last 11 matches saw just one or no team score.
