When these two sides met for the first time last season, Hull City had won just two of their opening ten league games whilst Middlesbrough were aiming for the top. How times change, the ‘Boro’ now have just two wins from 16 fixtures, largely due to their inability to hold a lead – they have conceded an equaliser on five of the seven occasions in which they went ahead this term.
To put it into perspective, Middlesbrough’s current nine-match winless streak (D4, L5) is the side’s longest such run outside of the top flight since January-March 1985, though they will equal that run should they fail to win here.
There are some bad omens for Hull though, as the ‘Tigers’ haven’t won three consecutive away league games since 2013. Moreover, Hull have won just one of their last 21 league visits to Middlesbrough (W1, D1, L19), losing their last six such games on Teesside.
Hull have been impressive in the first half this Championship campaign, trailing at the interval only once (HT: W6, D9, L1). Moreover, they have scored the opener in five of their seven away league games (71.43%), and unsurprisingly, seven of their eight shipped away goals have arrived in the second half.
Players to watchBritt Assombalonga ended a 386-minute scoreless run for Middlesbrough with a goal in both halves last time out.
Hull’s Kamil Grosicki and Jarrod Bowen have created a combined 23 chances for each other this Championship season, at least eight more than any other pair ahead of the round.
Stat attack: The Riverside Stadium has averaged a joint league-low 1.63 goals per match (62.5% of games 0-0 at half-time).
Hull are amongst the worst-disciplined Championship sides with 2.06 bookings per match on average.
Five of Hull’s seven away league games have produced over 2.5 goals – the other two saw both teams score.
