Montpellier (sixth) host St Etienne (eighth) in Friday’s Ligue 1 (L1) encounter. Both teams are battling for a Europa League qualification spot going into this round 35 encounter and just three points separate them.

After their win away to Strasbourg two weeks ago (1-0), Jean-Louis Gasset’s men showed character to defeat Troyes 2-1 last weekend, after being 1-0 down at half-time.
In 19 previous meetings at the Stade de la Mosson in their L1 History, Montpellier have a balanced record against St Etienne of: W9, D3, L7. ‘Les Verts’ (STE) do, however, have the better record against their hosts in recent history – winning eight of their last ten clashes (W8, L2).
Players to watch: Montpellier’s 21-year-old midfielder Salomon Sambia has scored one goal and has five assists – the highest assists total for his team.
St Etienne’s top scorer is Robert Beric has seven goals and one assist in L1 – he also scored his team’s last two goals.
Stat attack: With 30 goals conceded in 34 L1 rounds so far, Montpellier have the second-best defence in the league. They have kept 13 clean sheets in L1 this season – only PSG (17) and Marseille (14) have a better record.
St Etienne are on a run of six straight away matches without a loss (W4, D2), managing a clean sheet in four of these.
