Though they are favourites here, and joint-favourites with some (alongside England) to lift the UEFA Nations League (UNL) trophy, extra time is not an impossibility. Indeed, despite avoiding defeat in their last seven games as bookmakers’ favourites, Portugal have drawn each of their last three games in that category (W3, D4).
Relevantly, on the last occasion they lifted silverware, Portugal astonishingly drew six of their seven games en route to becoming EURO 2016 Champions. Excluding any extra time, all but one of those matches saw under 2.5 goals.
The presence of Switzerland often guarantees goals these days, with Vladimir Petkovic’s men seeing over 2.5 match goals in seven of their last nine competitive outings. Overall, those last nine matches have yielded (on average) 3.89 total goals per game.
However, it should be noted that the visitors achieved their last victory as away-day underdogs way back in November 2015 (2-1 vs Austria). They’ve lost the last two matches in that category by a single-goal margin.
Players to watch: All-time Portugal top-scorer, Cristiano Ronaldo (85 goals), makes his UNL debut. He seeks his first goal since the sole strike in a 1-0 victory over Morocco (June 2018).
Meanwhile, Haris Seferović scored a hat-trick in Switzerland’s latest victory as the betting underdogs (5-2 vs Belgium).
Stat attack: Portugal averaged 3.0 cards per match across their four UNL group games (11 yellow, one red).
Both of the prior managerial H2Hs have finished 2-0, with one victory apiece.
Switzerland have won only once in five all-time competitive H2Hs away to Portugal (W1, D1, L3).
Furthermore, the home side on the day is unbeaten in each of the last ten H2Hs.
