After a victorious opener in which they netted three goals in the closing half-hour to come from behind against South Africa, Spain have undergone a reality check. Two blanks and just one point thereafter means it could be an uphill struggle against the world’s top-ranked side.
There is nothing to suggest that Spain (ranked #13) will make the strong start required to concern the USA, having lost the first half 1-0 in two of their three 2019 World Cup (WC) games to date.
There are nine very good reasons to believe that the USA will coast to the quarter-finals. Going back to March 2019, that is the number of consecutive victories they have racked up, with the last seven seeing them keep a clean sheet and win both halves.
Though the USA can punish naivety at will, it is worth noting that their last four wins have only seen them score exactly once in the first 15 minutes. However, the goals are never far away, with the USA’s last outing being the only one in the last eight to see them fail to score 2+ consecutive match goals in at least one half.
Players to watch: Jenifer Hermoso’s brace of penalties for Spain (vs South Africa) remain Spain’s only goals this WC.
Carli Lloyd netted the first and last goals in the USA’s most recent win by a margin of over 2.5 goals.
Stat attack: Spain’s three historic WC defeats (W1, D2, L3) have come by a one-goal margin, suggesting a gallant loss could be on the cards.
July 2011 remains the last time the USA failed to win a WC match after scoring first, though they have never lost a WC match after drawing first blood.
There has only ever been one previous H2H, with the USA winning a friendly 1-0 after a goalless first half in January 2019.
