After finishing third in the inaugural UEFA Nations League, England entertain Bulgaria following a flush run of 12 consecutive European Championship qualifier (ECQ) wins. Each of the last four saw England win both halves, with two of the last three ECQs witnessing an own-goal from England’s opponents on the day.
Overall, England’s competitive home record since the start of 2013 stands at: W15, L1. The ‘Three Lions’ scored first in nine of the last 11 matches in that sequence, doing so inside the opening 30 minutes on two-thirds (six) of those occasions.
Bulgaria travel having won just one of their last 12 away matches in major competitions (W1, D3, L8), with the last six in that category separating the sides by less than 1.5 goals. However, the entire sequence also includes four defeats by a margin of 2+ goals against teams currently ranked in FIFA’s top-20.
On top of this, Bulgaria have never beaten England (D4, L6), with the only two H2Hs this century yielding a 7-0 aggregate defeat in Euro 2012 qualifying. Both games saw Bulgaria lose one half precisely by a 3-0 scoreline.
Players to watch: Raheem Sterling scored a hat-trick in his most recent ECQ match at Wembley. He has now scored beyond the hour mark in three of England’s last four ECQ matches.
Bulgarian attacker Ismail Isa took less than five minutes to open the scoring in his nation’s last ECQ away match. Three of his last four club goals have arrived in the 15 minutes either side of half-time.
Stat attack: Four of England’s last six ECQ home matches have seen them score at least twice beyond the hour mark.
Twelve of England’s last 13 ECQ home wins have yielded a clean sheet.
Bulgaria have taken the lead in their two prior away matches of this qualification campaign only to lose the second half 1-0 each time.
