Honduras will look to make the most of home comforts again for this international friendly, considering they’re unbeaten in their last eight on home soil; last suffering a home defeat in November 2016. Whilst they have won their last two matches 4-0, albeit against opposition with FIFA rankings of 68 and 180, the reality is that victories have been hard to come by with only seven in their previous 30 internationals (23.33%).
Nine of their last 12 internationals contests have been friendly fixtures, meaning there’s been a lot of experimenting with team line-ups. This is shown by their rather disappointing record across that period (W3, D3, L6), failing to score in five of those games, and keeping just four clean sheets in the process.
Chile are once again on their travels having only staged three home internationals in their last 20 games. They have a rather inconsistent record as a result (W7, D6, L7), with one of those victories being a 4-1 win in the most recent H2H. This run included their 2019 Copa América experience, in which they finished fourth.
For all the offensive talent in their squad, Chile’s defensive work also deserves credit. Of their last 17 victories, nine were accompanied by a clean sheet, including against Colombia (FIFA ranking: 8) and Mexico (FIFA ranking: 12).
Players to watchJorge Benguche netted twice on his international debut last week as Honduras beat Puerto Rico 4-0. Meanwhile, striker Eduardo Vargas has three goals in Chile’s last three wins, all coming in the second half.
Stat attack: Five of Honduras’ previous eight matches contained a minimum of four goals.
Only two of Chile’s last seven matches saw both teams score.
Honduras haven’t won three clashes in succession since January 2017.
