Two consecutive winless Ligue 1 (L1) games does an injustice to Rennes’ initial three-game winning start to the season, but having won the last four H2Hs held here versus Lille, this may be the perfect opponent to get back to winning ways.
The last two of those H2Hs saw both teams score, something that’s occurred in Rennes’ last seven competitive home games, so this clash has the makings of an entertaining affair. The hosts will be hoping to score the opener like they have done in eight of their previous ten top-flight games, although Rennes’ only goal across their last three L1 matches was an own goal.
A 3-0 defeat to Ajax midweek means Lille have seen consecutive win/loss results for their previous eight fixtures. If that pattern is to continue here they are due a win, but considering four of their last six L1 away victories saw both teams score, any victory is unlikely to come easily.
Winning 1-0 at half-time in all three of their L1 victories this campaign, if Lille are to concede expect it to be after half-time – all five league goals they’ve let in so far have arrived in the second half, and Lille are yet to see an away goal scored or conceded before the 70th minute this league season.
Players to watchM’Baye Niang (REN) netted the opener against Celtic midweek – he’s scored the opener in three of the last five games he’s found the net.
Lille’s top scorer Victor Osimhen (five goals) has netted a first-half opener in all three L1 games he’s scored in.
Stat attack: There’s been a penalty in three of Rennes’ last four L1 home matches.
There’s been a red card for Lille in their previous three L1 away games.
