A 13-match unbeaten league run (W8, D5) gives Cagliari hope of defeating Lazio in Serie A (SA) for the first time since May 2013. The hosts have been a true ‘second-half side’ this campaign, in terms of both goals scored (20 of 31) and conceded (13 of 19). Not surprisingly, Cagliari have managed ten SA first-half clean sheets this season.
Regardless, goals have been a common denominator in Cagliari’s SA matches, with five of their last six SA games producing over 3.5 total match goals – as has been the case in four of their last six SA home fixtures. Overall, Cagliari average 3.33 total goals scored/conceded per SA match.
Similarly entertaining, Lazio’s SA fixtures are currently averaging 3.4 total goals per-match. Yet, with seven straight league wins and a ten-match unbeaten run (W8, D2), Lazio are the in-form team here by far. Scoring first in two-thirds of their SA games, the visitors have failed to score a first-half goal in just three of 15 SA fixtures.
Furthermore, the visitors lead the SA ‘second-half table’, thanks largely to a defence that has conceded just three league goals after the break. Five of Lazio’s six SA away results (excluding the lone draw) have been decided by a single goal, with four ending at 2-1.
Players to watch: João Pedro (CAG) has been his team’s first scorer in five of the eight SA matches in which he has netted. The same can be said about Ciro Immobile in nine of Lazio’s 12 SA matches to see him score.
Stat attack: Nearly a fifth of Cagliari’s SA goals thus far (six of 31) have been scored beyond the 80th minute.
Lazio have scored at least two goals in each of their last ten SA matches, averaging 2.9 goals per-fixture.
Nine of the last ten SA H2Hs have witnessed the same result at both half-time and full-time.
