Both Chievo and Atalanta have struggled massively in this Serie A (SA) season, and while it’s still early, this could ultimately prove to be a crucial match in the relegation dogfight if neither side improves in coming weeks.
Still on negative points after a federation sanction, Chievo have secured just one of the last 15 points available (D1, L4) and are currently on a four-game losing streak following their 3-1 away defeat to AC Milan before the international break.
New Chievo manager Gian Piero Ventura has much to prove, after last year saw him become the first Italian national team manager for sixty years to fail in World Cup qualification.
Relatively speaking, Atalanta are in an even worse state, having so recently enjoyed a stellar return to European competition. They are winless in seven games (D3, L4), and have scored in only one of their past five matches, for a pitiful return of just two points from a possible 15.
Atalanta at least have an excellent record of: W6, D3, L1, over Chievo in their past ten league meetings, going undefeated in the last five (W4, D1). Overall, the historical record is in favour of Atalanta (W12, D12, L10), as are the aggregate goals (36-33) – for an average of 2.02 goals per H2H meeting.
Players to watch: With two goals, Mariusz Stępiński is the only Chievo player to have scored more than once during the current term.
Meanwhile, Alejandro Gomez remains Atalanta’s lone source of inspiration. He has been directly involved in five of the team’s nine goals (three goals, two assists).
Stat attack: Four of Chievo’s matches have seen both teams scoring.
Four of those matches have also seen over 2.5 goals scored.
Only two of Atalanta’s last eight league matches have seen both sides score.
