Valencia and Young Boys face-off at the Mestalla two weeks after sharing the spoils in Bern (1-1), a result that left both of their chances of reaching the Champions League (CL) last-16 stage hanging by a thread.
Both sides are still winless after three games and know that anything less than victory will all but end their last-16 hopes, should Manchester United claim maximum points against runaway pacesetters Juventus.
Valencia’s miserable domestic campaign hit a new low last Saturday as they fell to a 1-0 home defeat to an understrength Girona. Marcelino García Toral’s side, who currently sit third in Group H (D2, L1, -2), are yet to win at home this season (D5, L2). They have won just two of their opening 15 games in all competitions (D10, L3), a huge contrast to the unbeaten run that saw them win 11 of their opening 15 matches last season.
Rock-bottom Young Boys arrive at the Mestalla just one point behind their opponents (D1, L2, -6). The Swiss champions, who took another step towards their Super League title defence by cruising past Grasshoppers 3-0 away on Saturday, have now gone five games unbeaten in all competitions.
This will be Young Boys’ fourth trip to Spain (W1, L2). Their only win came back in 2009, when they beat Athletic Bilbao 1-0 in the Europa League qualifiers.
Players to watch: Chelsea loanee Michy Batshuayi, who put Valencia ahead in the reverse fixture, has only scored two goals in more than 700 minutes this campaign.
Guillaume Hoarau has got on the scoresheet in five of his last six appearances for Young Boys, and opened the scoring against Grasshoppers with a fine first-time strike.
Stat attack: Valencia and Young Boys are two of only four sides with just one goal to their name after the opening three CL games this season.
Valencia have failed to keep a clean sheet in seven of their last eight home games.
No team have had a lower shot conversion rate in the CL this season than Valencia (2.27%).
