Burnley welcome Liverpool to Turf Moor after contrasting fortunes in the previous Premier League (PL) round. The ‘Clarets’ lost 2-0 to relegation rivals Crystal Palace, while the visitors celebrated a 96th minute winner in the Merseyside derby (1-0).
The hosts are without a win since September (D2, L5), and enter this round just one point from the bottom of the table. Burnley look a completely different team from the one that finished in seventh place last season, and are leaking goals – conceding 2.07 on average per match.
At home, they have a solitary win this season (W1, D1, L4), but for better or for worse Burnley’s matches have provided entertainment, with 67% producing three goals or more.
Liverpool, meanwhile, are hanging on the coat-tails of Manchester City at the top of the table. Still unbeaten in the PL this season (W11, D3), the ‘Reds’ have only dropped points against current ‘Top Four’ rivals.
With just five goals conceded so far, the visitors can boast the league’s best defence, however they have conceded in four of their seven away league matches so far (W5, D2).
Players to watch: Sam Vokes is Burnley’s PL top scorer this season – and two of his three goals have come at home. Mohamed Salah, meanwhile, has racked up seven PL goals this campaign – and has four in his last six matches.
Stat attack: Burnley have gone on to lose all six league matches where they trailed at half-time.
… a bad omen considering Liverpool have been ahead at half-time in nine of their 14 PL matches.
Burnley’s PL home fixtures this season have produced an average of 3.5 total yellow cards.
Despite being a free-scoring side in 2017/18, Liverpool are one of only four PL sides this season that have seen more than half (57%) of their matches feature under 2.5 goals.
