A 1-1 draw at St James’ Park earned Blackburn the opportunity to spar with Premier League (PL) Newcastle on home turf, however, they have lost four of their last eight FA Cup matches held here (W3, D1, L4) – three of those to PL teams.
An 84th minute penalty saved Newcastle’s blushes in that third round tie, and continued a trend of drama in recent Blackburn games – across their last five, there’s been three red cards and three penalties. Late goals have also been a feature of Blackburn home matches this season, with seven of their last ten fixtures at Ewood Park involving a goal scored from the 80th minute to full-time – the same is true in four of the last six H2Hs (at all venues).
With just one win in their previous ten competitive matches (W1, D4, L5), Newcastle might not exude confidence. However, their record in FA Cup away games is far worse – the ‘Magpies’ last won away in this competition back in 2006 (D5, L10 since then), and have failed to score in 73% of away fixtures since.
After conceding in the 20 minutes following half-time in four of their last five matches, boss Rafael Benítez will know his side must concentrate after the break. However, the second half has been particularly barren upfront for Newcastle this season, with just 25% of their PL goals coming after half-time.
Players to watch: Bradley Dack (Blackburn) netted the opener in the 1-1 draw at St James’ Park – his 13th goal of the season. Meanwhile, Salomón Rondón is Newcastle’s top PL scorer with five and could feature here.
Stat attack: Blackburn have conceded in nine of their last ten home games.
Newcastle have conceded exactly one goal in three of their last five FA Cup away matches.
The last four H2Hs produced under 2.5 goals.
