Qatar will rarely have a better opportunity to justify their worth as 2022 World Cup hosts than getting a victory in their maiden Asian Cup final against Japan in Abu Dhabi.
Expect a fascinating clash between multidimensional attack and rock-solid defending, with Japan and Qatar responsible for 21% of the 126 goals scored at this year’s Asian Cup, whilst having conceded just three in total between them.
Japan saved their most convincing and dominant performance of their campaign for the 3-0 semi-final victory over Iran, outplaying their opponents where it mattered most, including passing accuracy (74%), shooting accuracy (57%), and tackling success (71%). The ‘Blue Samurai’ have never lost an Asian Cup final, with the most recent of their four titles being collected in Qatar itself in 2011 (1-0 extra-time win vs Australia).
A 4-0 drubbing of hosts UAE left Qatar manager Felix Sanchez feeling “very satisfied”, particularly with their sixth consecutive clean sheet setting a new Asian Cup record for most games without conceding a goal.
Their semi-final numbers illustrate a dominant display: they passed at 77%, shot at 71%, and won 57% of aerial duels – the latter a big reason for yet another clean sheet despite the UAE flinging a total of 27 crosses in and around the box.
Players to watch: Two of the tournament’s leading goal scorers do battle in the final: Yuya Osakohas scored two braces in his three appearances for Japan, while Almoez Ali (Qatar) will claim the all-time record for most goals at an Asian Cup if he gets one here.
Stat attack: Qatar have failed to defeat Japan in five H2H meetings this century (three 1-1 draws in 2000, 2007, and 2009, in addition to two defeats).
Both teams have scored in just one of Qatar’s last ten fixtures.
Japan have conceded more fouls at the tournament than any other nation.
