Tottenham enter the round just seven points off Liverpool at the top, and with eight wins from their last ten league matches (W8, L2), they have the second-strongest form in the top flight ahead of kick-off. That said, four of Tottenham’s six defeats this season have come in front of their own fans.
Against teams currently in the bottom half however, they have a perfect return, winning all four home matches against such opposition. Curiously, more than a third of their league home matches have ended in a 3-1 scoreline (36%).
Newcastle’s shock midweek win over Manchester City was their second league win in a row and put them five points clear of the relegation zone. The Tyneside club’s tally of four away defeats is equal to or less than 16 other teams in the league, and they’ve been very hard to break down on the road too.
Tellingly, their average of just 1.27 goals conceded per away league game is lower than two of the current top six. Additionally, more than half of the goals in Newcastle’s 11 PL away matches have come in the first half (57%), so a clean sheet at the break would be very encouraging for them.
Players to watchHeung-Min Son made an immediate impact upon his return from the Asian Championship, netting in Tottenham’s last match. Salomón Rondón, meanwhile, hit his sixth PL goal this season in Newcastle’s last match.
Stat attack: Tottenham have been ahead at half-time 15 times so far – the second highest tally in the league.
The hosts remain without a league draw this season, and relevantly, none of the last 13 H2Hs (all competitions) have ended in a draw.
Newcastle have lost three straight H2Hs against Tottenham, which saw 4.0 yellow cards on average as well as a red card.
