Match Preview

Playing for the first time in nearly ten months, Japan will hope to continue their impressive 78.13% undefeated record against African teams (W19, D6, L7). Additionally, they have never lost a H2H match (W3, D1) whilst keeping a clean sheet on each occasion (GF:5), although the last encounter was a decade ago. The ‘Samurai Blue’ are yet to draw any of their last nine matches (W7, L2), with six of those wins finishing with a clean sheet.

Eight of the aforementioned nine matches saw the HT result replicated at FT, with the winner keeping a HT clean sheet in each game. Along similar lines, six of Japan’s last seven international friendlies (W4, D1, L2) have seen only one or neither team score.

Playing only their fourth match of the calendar year, Cameroon’s previous nine matches since last June have been ‘draw magnets’ (W2, D6, L1), with five of the six draws ending goalless. Extending that theme, 69.57% (16) of Cameroon’s 23 matches since the start of 2018 have seen only one or neither team score. Additionally, 82.61% (19) of those 23 have produced under 2.5 total match goals, whilst 13 ended with under 1.5.

Cameroon’s tryst with draws extends in their record vs Asian sides (W9, D12, L6). However, nine of their last 11 friendlies have seen a winner (W4, D2, L5), although the last two were stalemates! Seven of those nine win/loss results have come via a single-goal margin however, with three winning goals arriving beyond the 75th minute.

Players to watch: Averaging a goal every other match in national colors, Takumi Minamino has been Japan’s first scorer in his last three goalscoring matches.

Cameroon’s all-time fifth-highest goalscorer Vincent Aboubakar has been his nation’s first scorer with his last five strikes – three of which have come before the half-hour mark.

Hot stat: Japan have won seven of their last ten friendlies against African sides (W7, D1, L2), scoring 2+ goals in each win.
