Dortmund – Rangers Match Preview
- After dropping down into the UEFA Europa League (UEL) despite a decent Champions League showing (W3, L3), Borussia Dortmund find themselves in the UEL knockouts as favourites to win the tournament, and with a favourable tie against Scottish champions Rangers. The Germans have found Scottish sides easy to deal with in previous encounters, going unbeaten in all seven UEFA home matches vs Scottish opposition (W4, D3), securing an impressive six clean sheets in the process.
- Defending hasn’t come so naturally for BVB in recent matches though, after conceding 13 goals (1.86 on average) across their last seven competitive home matches (W4, L3). Still, they should walk out at Signal Iduna Park with a swagger after their 3-0 weekend win over Union Berlin – the 53rd Bundesliga game from Dortmund’s last 54 where they found the net – saw them close the gap on first-placed Bayern Munich.
- While this glamour tie looks exceptionally difficult for Rangers – especially considering their poor away form in 2022 (W1, D2, L1) – it’s given the blue side of Glasgow bragging rights as fierce city rivals Celtic gear up for a less eye-catching European fixture vs Bodø/Glimt. If boss Giovanni van Bronckhorst can replicate three of Rangers’ last four trips to Dortmund (D3, L1) they will give themselves a fighting chance for the second leg at Ibrox, a place BVB boss Marco Rose has admitted Rangers are a ‘force’ at.
- Returning to Ibrox with a result will ignite hope in Govan that Rangers can progress past the first round of springtime knockout matches for a third consecutive season, although they remain shackled by a winless European away record this term (D3, L2).
