Arsenal – Everton Match Preview

  • Champions League qualification is out of Arsenal’s hands as they head into the final day of the Premier League (PL) season. The ‘Gunners’ require Tottenham to slip up at Norwich and must beat manager Mikel Arteta’s former club Everton to finish in the top four for the first time since 2015/16, but they can take some confidence from the fact the ‘Toffees’ have lost on 11 of their 16 visits to the Emirates Stadium, failing to win there until last season.
  • However, the North London outfit are stumbling towards the finish line. They have lost five of their last nine top flight matches, including (and most damagingly) their last two games at Spurs and Newcastle without scoring, while they’ve managed just one clean sheet in seven at home. The positive for Arteta though is his side seem to sweep up against the division’s ‘lesser’ sides, winning seven of their nine fixtures at the Emirates when facing teams currently in the bottom half of the table, although that’s unlikely to be enough in their pursuit of a return to Europe’s top table.
  • An emotional evening at Goodison Park on Thursday saw Everton secure their place in the PL for next season as they came from 2-0 down to beat Crystal Palace 3-2, sparking scenes of jubilation from a relieved fanbase. That was a fourth win in eight for the ‘Toffees’, but they do have a depleted side as the likes of Yerry Mina and Andros Townsend remain injured, while Donny van de Beek and Ben Godfrey are not fit enough to start.
  • Frank Lampard insists Everton will treat this clash with the respect it deserves, given the implications it has on the Champions League race, however the Merseysiders have been desperately poor on the road this season. They picked up a win against Leicester and drew with Watford in their last two away fixtures, but no team has managed fewer than their total of ten points on their travels, losing a staggering 12 games (W2, D4).
  • Players to watch: Arsenal top scorer Bukayo Saka has been a PL ever-present this season, contributing two goals and an assist in his last six games, while he is averaging nearly one shot on target per match. Helping to drag Everton clear of the relegation zone, Richarlison netted against Crystal Palace on Thursday and now has six goals in his last nine outings. He also scored against Arsenal earlier in the season.
  • Hot stat: Everton, currently on 39, have only failed to reach the 40 point mark once before in a PL season – back in 2003/04 when they finished 17th and Leeds got relegated.
