Stoke – Middlesbrough Match Preview

  • It looked like Stoke City were heading for a positive result at Huddersfield after equalising last time out, but a late collapse saw them lose 3-1. Boss Michael O’Neill described that scoreline as “extremely harsh” in a game that they dominated, and he now hopes for better as his men welcome Middlesbrough, a side they’re unbeaten against in 16 of the last 18 home league H2Hs (W10, D6).
  • Despite posting a mixed start to this league season (W1, L2), Stoke often save their best performances for their home games. Currently unbeaten in five of their last six matches here (W4, D1, L1), the Potters also kept clean sheets in each victory during that time, just as they did in five of the last six visits of Middlesbrough.
  • Chris Wilder’s Boro will need to be at their best, but after witnessing just two sides score more than them after three rounds, their winless record so far may be somewhat deceiving (D2, L1). The sparks of hope are there to be seen, perhaps most notably in the revival of the enigmatic Chuba Akpom, who hit his first brace for the club last weekend after returning from his loan spell at PAOK.
  • A revival in away form is also needed, with Middlesbrough recording only two wins across their last 12 away league games (D4, L6), a poor show for a team tipped as promotion candidates pre-season. Perhaps a good omen is the fact that Boro defeated Stoke in five of the last seven league meetings (D1, L1), with three of the last four wins seeing multi-goal margins.
  • Players to watch: Formerly of Boro, Lewis Baker has scored more goals than any other Stoke player since his debut, but just one of those nine strikes served to open the scoring. As for Middlesbrough, Matthew Hoppe could be in line for his full debut, he famously became the first American to score a Bundesliga hat-trick while at Schalke and looks to impress after making his USMNT World Cup dreams known.
  • Hot stat: Wilder has overseen stalemates in three of his four personal H2Hs with Stoke (W1).
