• Sampdoria’s improbable chances of avoiding relegation took a hit on Monday night, as they fell to a 1-0 defeat at Empoli to put them on single figures after 18 Serie A (SA) rounds for the first time in their history. Their gap to safety now stands at seven points, though last season’s survival of Salernitana – who were five adrift of 17th at the same stage – may inspire them, despite a preceding run of five straight SA home defeats ‘to-nil’.
• Several January window reinforcements may help to turn the tide, with the likes of loanees Sam Lammers and Alessandro Zanoli already arriving to provide extra options up top and out wide respectively.
