Wolves – Liverpool Predictions and Preview
- Wolverhampton Wanderers were in desperate need of the international break after a dismal start to their Premier League (PL) campaign saw them suffer defeat in three of their opening four matches. Their only points this season came in a narrow 1-0 win over struggling Everton, where keeping a clean sheet once again proved Wolves’ saving grace, since they’ve won only twice in the last 37 PL games they’ve conceded (D8, L27).
- It’s hardly been the start manager Gary O’Neil would’ve plotted on arrival at Molineux, as their usual ambitions of a mid-table finish are being overshadowed by mere hopes of survival. Things don’t get easier for O’Neil’s side with the arrival of Liverpool, a team against whom Wolves have suffered the most league defeats (nine) since re-entering the top-flight in 2018/19.
- Visiting manager Jürgen Klopp won’t be cashing in the three points just yet, after his side left the Black Country last season on the wrong end of a 3-0 walloping. However, that result will almost certainly have been forgotten after an extremely positive start to this campaign (W3, D1) has left Liverpool with a chance to go top of the league with a win here, although that could be shortlived.
- The Reds have put themselves in the frame to leapfrog Tottenham Hotspur and leaders Manchester City after extending the league’s longest active unbeaten streak to 15 games (W10, D5), which is impressively their fifth different run of 15+ PL games without defeat under Klopp. The only threat to their table-topping aspirations doesn’t seem to be the opposition then, but rather the time of day, as the Reds failed to win any of their six early Saturday kick-offs last season (D3, L3), five of which came on their travels (D2, L3).
- Players to watch: Hwang Hee-chan will be pushing for a start after scoring half of Wolves’ PL goals this season as a substitute. His efforts might be in vain given Mohamed Salah is chasing a goal contribution for an 11th consecutive PL match (G5, A7), and could become only the fourth-ever player to assist in five consecutive PL away matches.
- Hot stat: Six of Liverpool’s last eight away PL matches saw both teams find the net.
