Nottingham – Burnley Predictions and Preview
- After an eye-catching 1-0 win against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge in their last outing, the international break probably came at an inopportune time for Nottingham Forest. They return with a seemingly favourable clash against Burnley, although Forest will be acutely aware that the Clarets have already beaten them this season, dumping them out of the EFL Cup last month.
- This is surprisingly only Forest’s second home league game of the season, and with the other ending in a 2-1 victory against a Sheffield United side who were promoted with Burnley last season, the omens appear good for the Tricky Trees securing what would be a fifth successive home Premier League (PL) win. To do so, they’ll have to do something they haven’t done since 2012, namely beat Burnley (D3, L4)!
- That’s about the only positive omen Burnley have to cling onto at the moment, with a losing three-game start to the season seeing them sit rock-bottom of the table ahead of the PL’s return. A 5-2 drubbing from Spurs preceded the international break, after which boss Vincent Kompany insisted his side must “close the gap” to the other teams as they bid to avoid losing a fourth successive game to open a league campaign for only the third time in history!
- You don’t need to be a football expert to see where Burnley’s current problem lies, and that’s at the back. The Clarets have leaked a league-high 11 goals prior to the PL’s resumption, and after the club’s failure to bring in a recognised left-back in the transfer window, it poses the question of whether Burnley’s raft of attacking talent is enough to offset a decisively poor defence.
- Players to watch: Anthony Elanga was Forest’s hero against Chelsea, but he’s yet to score a senior home goal in professional football. Zeki Amdouni was Burnley’s very own hero in the EFL Cup tie, and nine of his last ten club goals have arrived after the break.
- Hot streak: Forest have netted in each of their last 11 PL matches, their longest scoring streak in the top-flight since a run of 14 between February and August 1995.
