Preston – Millwall Predictions and Preview
- Hot on the tails of the early Championship pace setters until recently, Preston’s three successive defeats prior to the international break now sees them firmly adrift of the top two. Boss Ryan Lowe insists the pause in Championship action was a chance for his side to “reset” in the hope they can “come back stronger”, sentiment he’ll hope to see his charges back up against Millwall.
- That’s definitely not a foregone conclusion, especially as North End are winless in their last eight meetings with the London side (D2, L6). But if there was ever a place to change that run, then Deepdale is probably it, with Preston winning four of their five home league games there this season (L1), all four of which interestingly came via the same 2-1 scoreline!
- Millwall’s start to the season (W4, D3, L4) has been far less eye-catching that Preston’s, with consistency the biggest issue they face after their last eight results all differed from the one prior. A 2-2 draw against Hull prior to the international break would hint at this game being decided one way or another, and having lost just one of their five away league games this term (W2, D2), Millwall will hope it’s in their favour.
- It likely won’t be that straightforward for Millwall, who parted company with former boss Gary Rowett in midweek, with Adam Barrett placed in caretaker charge for this clash. The fact that this game is Sky Sports’ pick for the 12:30 kick-off certainly raises doubts over whether Barrett will have an instant impact, as Millwall have peculiarly won just one of their last eight Saturday Championship matches in this timeslot (D2, L5).
- Players to watch: Ben Whiteman was on target in the second half for Preston against Ipswich prior to the break (L 4-2), but his last three home goals arrived before the break. Milwall’s Duncan Watmore has a taste for scoring against North West opposition, with five of his last seven goals interestingly coming against clubs from that region, all of which arrived before the hour mark.
- Hot stat: Millwall’s away league games this term have seen a joint-league low two first half goals scored.
