Coventry – Rotherham Predictions and Preview

  • Back-to-back league defeats for the first time since the end of October are threatening to de-rail Coventry’s attempts to get back into the Premier League for the first time since 2000/2001. The Sky Blues, beaten finalists in last season’s Championship play-off final, now sit five points behind sixth place, with manager Mark Robins admitting injuries to a number of key players within the squad leaves the season at risk of “fizzling out.”
  • The boss was speaking after Friday’s 2-1 defeat to West Bromwich Albion, a result which leaves Coventry with just one clean sheet from their last 11 league outings (W5, D3, L3). Their recent struggles aren’t helped by Tatsuhiro Sakamoto, Ben Sheaf and Jamie Allen all being in the treatment room, but history suggests they have a good chance of bouncing back to form at the CBS Arena after a 3-0 defeat against Preston in their last outing here, as they haven’t lost successive Championship home fixtures since August 2022.
  • Worryingly though, they don’t have a good record against opponents Rotherham in recent years, who have lost only one of the last six away H2Hs (W1, D4). The visitors will take all the positives they can get, given they sit rock-bottom of the table and 19 points from safety after a miserable run of seven successive defeats, including a 1-0 reversal against Sheffield Wednesday at the weekend.
  • The Millers are therefore destined for a return to League One, but supporters will be hoping they can land a few blows on their Championship rivals before their two-year stint in the second tier comes to an end. They can perhaps take heart from the fact that one of their three league wins this season came against Coventry in October, but any enthusiasm will be tempered by the fact Leam Richardson’s side last tasted victory away from home in November 2022 (D11, L22).
  • Players to watch: Striker Ellis Simms is unbeaten in the last 13 games in which he has scored (W8, D5), with the five draws all finishing 2-2! Battling him for the limelight, Rotherham’s Jordan Hugill is looking to end a 24-game goal drought against a Coventry side he has won five of his six personal H2Hs against (W5).
  • Hot stat: 13 of Coventry’s last 15 games across all competitions have seen 3+ total goals.
