Top of the table Barcelona meet third-placed Valencia on Saturday in La Liga’s (LL) standout game of round 32. Whilst Barcelona can’t wrap up the title this weekend, it surely won’t be long before the pride of Catalonia can celebrate their 25th top-flight title in a season that has seen them go unbeaten to date.
Barcelona will have to pick themselves up after the huge midweek disappointment of dropping out of the Champions League (CL) after a 3-0 reversal at the hands of Roma (4-4 on aggregate, lost on away goals). The result was undoubtedly one of the biggest CL upsets in living memory.
With the treble dream gone, disappointed Barca coach Ernesto Valverde tried to put on a brave face: “We have to focus on the competitions we have left. We have to try and win them because we have not won anything yet. The defeat hurts, but now we need to look forward.”
Valencia have surprised everyone this season under coach Marcelino. After starting the season on fire, they suffered a loss of form in December through to early February only to come back strongly recently, winning eight of their last nine and drawing the other game.
With a top-four position all but guaranteed, Valencia’s goal will be to finish in the top three and qualify automatically for the CL.
Players to watch: Goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen has kept 18 clean sheets in LL this season, just five off the all-time Barcelona record of 23 by Claudio Bravo in 2014/15.
Rodrigo has had a great season for Valencia scoring 15 LL goals and creating four for his teammates.
Stat attack: Barcelona haven’t lost in five versus Valencia in all competitions (W4, D1), but Valencia have won two out of the last four at the Nou Camp in LL.
Lionel Messi has 24 goals against Valencia in all competitions, but no goal in his last three against them.
Valencia have struck first in three of the last four LL games against Barcelona.
