Match Preview
In a re-run of the 2014 World Cup’s (WC) opening game, these nations will meet for only the fourth time since Croatia gained their independence (1991). |
The logic behind Croatia’s decision to participate in a friendly with Brazil is obvious. The Croatians face what is arguably the most difficult WC group, with a match against Argentina the key flashpoint for them where progress is concerned. As a seeded side, Brazil should win their group, but face two decent European teams and this match should keep the five-time champions on their toes. |
As one would expect, Brazil are in exemplary form, having gone unbeaten in nine matches and last losing in a friendly back in June 2017 to Argentina (1-0). Croatia’s last two friendly games (in March) yielded mixed results. A 2-0 defeat to Peru on March 24 was a result of concern, but just four days later, Croatia dispatched CONCACAF giants Mexico 1-0. |
Gustavo Hofman of ESPN has also supported the belief that this friendly will benefit Brazil as much as Croatia, saying: “It will be a decent indicator to see where the Selecao (Brazil) is at right now and how Neymar fits in as he returns to his best. They (Croatia) are a very technical side, they have a great midfield.” |
Players to watch: Ivan Rakitić scored the winner against México from the penalty spot, marking his first goal since September 2016. |
Brazilian set-piece expert Roberto Firmino should cause Croatia a raft of problems here. His last international goal came in a WC qualifier against Bolivia in October 2016. |
Stat attack: In addition to being unbeaten in nine games, Brazil have not conceded in three. They have also scored first in four out of the last five. |
Also of potential importance is the fact that Croatia’s last come-from-behind win was back in June 2016, 2-1 against Spain in Euro 2016. |
