Last season’s play-off winners, Vitesse, face an uphill battle to qualify for a second successive final after losing the first-leg at Groningen 2-1. However, they are not without hope – they won last year’s semi-final second-leg 2-1, a scoreline that would send this one to extra-time.
Leonid Slutsky’s Vitesse were the best of the rest at home outside of the traditional ‘Big Three’ sides this season, losing only once here and that was to champions Ajax (0-4). Extra-time may not be necessary if they can live up to that form, half (five) of their Eredivisie home victories came by a margin of at least three goals.
Moreover, Vitesse were winning at both HT/FT in 60% of their Eredivisie home wins, just as they did when these sides met here in the league (5-1). Notably though, visiting manager Danny Buijs’ has won 2-1 in his last two encounters with Slutsky’s Vitesse despite the fact that Groningen are winless in five visits to Arnhem (D1, L4; 15-3 agg).
In stark contrast, Groningen have won just one of their last 11 Eredivisie away matches (W1, D5, L5). Interestingly, four of the five draws in this sequence were goalless; making up a third of all goalless draws during the regular season.
Players to watch: Vitesse star Martin Ødegaard has been directly involved with five goals across their last three home outings (three assists, two goals) with the assists accompanying Bryan Linssen’s recent hat-trick. Meanwhile, Groningen top-scorer Mimoun Mahi (seven goals) ended a seven-game goal drought after returning from injury in the first-leg.
Stat attack: Vitesse scored 64.44% of their Eredivisie home goals after half-time.
Away from home, Groningen have managed to equalise just twice after going behind in a game on 11 occasions.
Groningen have scored just four (30.77%) of their paltry 13 away goals after half-time, and none after the 75th minute.
