The United States’ (US) devastating 13-0 win over Thailand in the opening group game has given them an immediate fear factor. It also represented the team’s fifth consecutive win (with a clean sheet) by 3+ goals, giving them an average goals-per-game return of precisely 6.0 across that quintet of victories.
Unsurprisingly, the US like to start strong, and have now opened the scoring inside the first 15 minutes of play in four of their last six wins. However, they have not scored multiple goals inside the opening quarter-hour of any match since a World Cup (WC) qualifier in October 2018.
On current evidence, Chile will do well to avoid Thailand’s fate, having returned a record of D2, L7 from their last nine games against FIFA-recognised nations. A 7-0 defeat to the Netherlands (April 2019) precedes a run of: D1, L2, where both losses saw Chile lose one half 2-0, with no goals at all in the other.
Even though the odds are stacked against Chile, any matches involving them where both teams score have the potential to keep us in suspense early on. Of their last five matches to produce goals both ways, all have seen the first two match goals shared.
Players to watch: Alex Morgan (USA) ran riot against Thailand, netting five times, including a two-goal salvo inside the final 15 minutes.
Two of Chile’s last three games to see any goalscoring joy have witnessed a second-half goal from Karen Araya.
Stat attack: The US have now scored at least twice in the final 15 minutes (plus stoppage-time) in each of their last four wins.
Going back to the inaugural 1991 WC, the US have won their second group game seven of a possible eight times.
A penalty (either way) has featured in the last two games involving Chile where both teams have scored.
