South Africa (FIFA rank: #49) take on Germany (#2) in their final group stage match, and must win here if they are to have any chance of progression. However after defeat in both of their World Cup (WC) fixtures so far, South Africa are winless in 12 games (D4, L8).
Five of those 12 winless games have seen South Africa fail to score, although ‘Banyana Banyana’ have netted first – and been leading 1-0 at half-time – in three of the last four games they scored in (D1, L2). That includes a 3-1 loss to Spain in their WC opener.
Two-time WC winners Germany sit top of Group B following two 1-0 victories. They are now on a confidence-boosting 13-game unbeaten run (W11, D2) that includes nine clean sheets, and just one game where they failed to find the net.
Conceding an average of just 0.54 goals per fixture across that run, Germany only went behind in two of those 13 fixtures, equalising twice against Japan (#7) in a 2-2 draw and beating Canada (#5) 3-2 despite being 2-1 down with 20 minutes to go.
Players to watchThembi Kgatlana scored the opener against Spain, and got the opening goal in three of South Africa’s last five 2018 African Championship matches. The last three of those goals (WC/AC) arrived before half-time.
Sara Däbritz scored the winner in Germany’s last victory, whilst five of her 15 season goals for club and country were match openers.
Stat attack: In South Africa’s last ten games, one or no team scored in the first half.
Six of South Africa’s last seven matches have seen a 1-0 half-time scoreline.
Germany are yet to lose a second half in their last 13 games.
In this sequence, Germany scored 20 second-half goals, but only four came after the 75th minute.
