The round-of-16 throws up a battle between three-time Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) winners Nigeria, and reigning champions Cameroon – although both teams did fail to win their final group stage match.
Nigeria lost 2-0 to Madagascar last time out, ending a nine-game unbeaten run in this tournament for the ‘Super Eagles’ (W7, D2). However if they return to winning ways here, it could be tight – Nigeria’s previous three AFCON victories came via a 1-0 scoreline, with the last two seeing the winner scored beyond the 70th minute. In fact, four of Nigeria’s last six competitive matches produced a 1-0 scoreline either way, with all six seeing at least one team fail to find the net.
Five-time AFCON winners Cameroon are now undefeated in their last six games (W3, D3), and are yet to concede in this tournament – although their last two group stage matches did end goalless.
Furthermore, the ‘Untameable Lions’ are unbeaten in their last nine matches in this competition (W4, D5 – after 90 minutes). During that period, both teams scored in just three of those games, with Cameroon conceding a first-half opener in two – albeit they came back to win both 2-1.
Players to watch: Moses Simon assisted Nigeria’s last AFCON goal and scored a first-half opener in the last H2H back in 2017. Meanwhile, Christian Bassogog scored in Cameroon’s final AFCON qualifier, and won the 2017 tournament’s ‘Man of the Competition’ award.
Stat attack: Nigeria have failed to score in four of their last eight matches, but did keep five clean sheets.
Twelve of Nigeria’s last 14 knock-out stage fixtures that saw a winner (including extra-time) were decided by a one goal-margin (W8, L4), with all 12 ending via a 1-0 or 2-1 scoreline.
Cameroon’s last four AFCON draws ended goalless.
Cameroon are yet to see a first-half goal this tournament.
