Real Madrid’s season took a turn for the worse on Wednesday when they crashed out of the Copa del Rey (CDR) to Leganes on away goals (2-2* agg.). Pressure is now really beginning to mount on coach Zinedine Zidane which he recognised, saying after the CDR exit: “Of course. That is really clear. I am responsible for this, I’m the coach.”
In La Liga (LL) things aren’t much better for Real. Despite the stunning 7-1 victory at home to Deportivo last weekend, they are 19 points adrift of Barcelona (five behind Valencia) and struggling to find any consistent form amid unrest at the club, much of it centering on the future of Cristiano Ronaldo.
Valencia have been the surprise package this season and despite losing four of their last seven LL games, are still well positioned in third (40 points) to bring Champions League football back to the Mestalla.
There has been some suggestion coach Marcelino has prioritised the CDR and this may have explained a weakened team in last weekend’s 2-1 loss at then bottom-placed Las Palmas, ahead of Wednesday’s CDR penalty shoot-out win over Alaves.
You can’t see the coach fielding a weaker team in this one however, the fans wouldn’t allow it!
Players to watch: Can Simone Zaza rediscover his pre-Christmas form that saw him score ten league goals?
Maybe not always an obvious choice, but Luka Modric has actually had a good season. Can he pull the strings here and make Real tick?
Stat attack: Real have lost one away game all season, but have failed to win in their last four, drawing the last three. Valencia have lost one home match all season.
Valencia are unbeaten in three at home to Real. The last nine games between these old foes have produced over 2.5 goals. Indeed, Valencia’s last five games (all competitions) also registered over 2.5.
Only one 0-0 between these sides has been recorded in the last 23 at the Mestalla.
