David Moyes’ West Ham welcome Roy Hodgson’s Crystal Palace as the Premier League (PL) returns after a weekend of FA Cup action. The Hammers did not fare so well, getting knocked out by Wigan in controversial circumstances whilst Palace enjoyed the extra preparations, having already been eliminated.
This game is West Ham’s 200th London derby! Of any London side the Hammers have lost the most derby games (W62, D44, L93).
Crystal Palace have become much harder to break down since Hodgson arrived – they are now unbeaten in 12 of their last 15 PL games, but all three defeats were in London derby games.
Moyes’ man management skills have been put to the test over the last couple of days, after full back Arthur Masuaku was sent off for spitting in another players face. Moyes says it is “completely out of character” for Masuaku and he is usually a great lad to have around the club.
Mark Noble has played 300 PL games for the Hammers. He’s a local lad and grew up less than a mile from the stadium and recently told reporters: “I used to try and sneak in without a ticket, but to now captain this great club for 300 games is incredible”.
Players to watch: West Ham new boy Joao Mario is expected to make his debut here. The speedy winger has just arrived on loan from Serie A club Inter Milan – where he scored three goals in 44 SA appearances.
Luka Milivojevic could make history here as he has now scored in each of Palace’s last three away PL games – no player has ever scored in four consecutive away PL games for the Eagles.
Stat attack: West ham are unbeaten in the last five meetings between the two, winning three and drawing two (PL), six of the last seven meetings in all competitions have produced over 2.5 goals in total.
Five of the last seven PL meetings between these sides have produced exactly four goals and BTTS.
