Match Preview

Hamburg are in a struggle in the depths of the Bundesliga (BL) going into this round 21 encounter. Meanwhile, Hannover will try to close the gap to the European qualification places in this game.
In 28 previous meetings at Volksparkstadion in their BL history, Hamburg have won 16, Hannover have claimed six victories and the other six games were drawn.
After four straight losses in the league against Frankfurt (1-2), Mönchengladbach (3-1), Augsburg (1-0) and FC Koln (0-2), Hamburg finally stopped the rot with good 1-1 draw at Leipzig last Saturday. Despite picking up one point, Bernd Hollerbach’s men still sit 17th in the BL standings – four points adrift of safety.
Following their hard-fought 3-2 home win against Mainz in round 18 and a solid 1-1 draw at Schalke 04 15 days ago, Hannover completely messed-up their match at home against Wolfsburg (1-0) last weekend. Currently tenth in the BL, André Breitenreiter and his team are five points below a European qualification place.
Players to watch: Hamburg’s best player so far this season has been Filip Kostic who has three goals in the BL. The 25-year-old Serbian further highlighted his recent form by hitting an important equaliser against Leipzig.
Kostic will go head-to-head with 24-year-old German striker Niclas Füllkrug. With nine goals and three assists, he has been directly involved in 42% of Hannover’s 28 goals.
Stat attack: Hamburg have failed to win their last seven matches in the BL (D3, L4). However, they are unbeaten at home in ten of their last 11 clashes against their upcoming opponent (WD, D5, L1).
With only eight goals scored in ten home games this season so far, Hamburg are the worst home attack in the league.
Hannover are on a run of six straight away matches without a single win in all competitions (D1, L5).
With 24 yellow cards awarded on the road, Hannover boast the second-highest total in the league.
