The reverse fixture was an exciting 2-2 draw and Maxim Choupo-Moting opened the scoring for Stoke in the 28th minute. Just before the break (44th minute) Pascal Gross equalised for the hosts. However, just one minute after the break a Kurt Zouma header from a corner restored Stoke’s lead, before Jose Izquierdo fired home a rebound in the box to earn a valuable point for the Seagulls.
Last season after round 27 Stoke were ninth in the Premier League (PL) with 35 points. Depending on other results a win after this match could potentially see them climb out of relegation, which is the best they can hope for after conceding more goals (52) than any other team in the PL.
Just three points off of the relegation zone, 12th placed Brighton have 27 points and a goal difference of -14 and will be desperate for a win to move them further away from danger.
Stoke coach Paul Lambert recently spoke to the press about this upcoming fixture: “For me the big thing is that we’re playing where we have to go and win. We know it’s a difficult game, Chris [Hughton] has done great with them to bring them up from the Championship. We’re the home team, the onus is on us”.
Players to watch: 34-year-old veteran Glenn Murray has scored five goals in his last seven games. Currently on a consecutive scoring run of three games, can he score another on a cold rainy afternoon in Stoke?
Paul Lambert heaped praise on Stoke’s new midfielder Badou Ndiaye, who was excellent on his debut last weekend, including providing an assist for Xherdan Shaqiri. Lambert stated: “For a lad who had only come in on the Friday and not really knowing his team-mates, he was first class”.
Stat attack: Stoke have the worst away record in the league, with just one win their last 13. Luckily they are at home this fixture, and this season Stoke games have produced an average of 3.1 goals per game – 82 goals in total.
Brighton have only won two games away this season, conceding 16 goals in 13 away games – an average of 1.2 goals conceded per game.
Stoke have an impressive record over Brighton and have not lost to them in their last nine games. Over the last ten H2H games, Stoke’s record stands at: W8, D1, L1. Most importantly for this fixture though, is that Brighton have never beaten Stoke away in the five most recent clashes.
