Match Preview

In their 400th Bundesliga match a struggling FSV Mainz welcome Champions League-ambitious FC Schalke in the first game of round 26.
Placed 16th in the table, Mainz need an upturn of form to fend off a relegation dogfight, while second-placed Schalke will try to increase their distance from the pack.
Schalke celebrated a very important away win against Bayer Leverkusen last weekend (2:0). Mainz held on to a draw against fellow strugglers HSV last Saturday (0:0), playing with ten men for nearly 30 minutes after a second yellow card was shown to Leon Balogun.
Mainz’s confidence has grown during the last three rounds, and after losing three Bundesliga games in a row, they haven’t lost any of their last three since (W1, D2).
Schalke’s form has fluctuated since the winter break with a record of W1, D1, L3 in the first five games in 2018, losing to top clubs Bayern and Leipzig on the road. However, Schalke’s confidence will be high as The Königsblauen are on a run of three wins on the spin.
Players to watch: Japanese forward Yoshinori Muto scored Mainz’s last league goal – and overall he has seven goals and one assist in the league so far.
Schalke’s top goalscorer Guido Burgstaller returns from suspension. He scored in his last league game and already has eight goals and three assists this season.
Stat Attack: In their H2H history, Schalke have won all twelve Bundesliga matches against Mainz in the first half of the season. However, they have won only two of eleven after the winter break (second half of the season).
In home games, Mainz are most dangerous in the 45-60’ period (five goals of 16 in total). But after twelve away games so far, Schalke are yet to concede a goal in that period.
Mainz have lost their last three league games against Schalke without scoring. In total, they have lost 14 of 23 Bundesliga games against Schalke (only losing more to Bayern Munich).
