Match Preview

Five times European champions Liverpool are set to welcome Roma for the first leg of the Champions League (CL) semi final. It’s Roma’s first appearance in the last four since 1984 – when they lost in the final, in Rome, to Liverpool!
It is Liverpool’s tenth appearance in the semi-finals, and they’ve proceeded to the final on seven occasions. Their last appearance at this stage, however, was a decade ago, when they were eliminated by Chelsea. They’ve only faced Italian opposition once at this stage, in the 1964/’65 aggregate defeat against Internazionale.
The Anfield boys have scored goals for fun so far in the tournament: 33 in total from ten games is a higher average than the Madrid side of 2013/’14 that scored 41 in 13 games. Barcelona hold the all-time record of 46 goals (from 16 games).
This will be Roma’s tenth knockout stage match against English sides, and to progress to the final here they will need to break a pattern which has seen them lose the six last. They faced English opposition in the group stage this year, however, drawing 3-3 away and winning 3-0 at home against Chelsea.
Players to watch: Liverpool’s star winger Mohamed Salah, who spent two seasons at Roma, has scored eight CL goals so far – and in seven straight games in all competitions!
Edin Dzeko has earned the stamp ‘big-game player’ recently, and has scored three goals in the knockout stage, including in both games against Barcelona.
Stat attack: Roma have conceded 2+ goals in four of their five CL away games so far.
Referee Felix Brych has dealt an average of 4.2 yellow cards in 48 CL matches, pulling out the red on 15 occasions. Both these teams, however, have been ‘good guys’ with just 13 (Roma) and 15 (Liverpool) yellows from ten matches.
Roma’s CL goal difference this season is +3 goals (15 scored v 12 conceded), Liverpool’s +26 (33 v 7)!
In 16 European away games (includes group phase games) against English opponents, Roma have only managed one win (D6, L9)!
