The final game of the Premier League (PL) season is one without significance for both sides as Watford have already avoided relegation and United will finish in second place regardless of the result.
United’s 0-0 draw against West Ham and former United manager David Moyes last round was their second goalless display on the bounce and the first time this has happened to the ‘Red Devils’ this season.
The point was enough to secure second place however, and manager José Mourinho defended the performance in his post-match interview, stating: “Obviously, when you know you need a point to finish second…you are not going to gamble to try to win”.
Watford secured yet another season in the top flight after beating Newcastle last week (2-1). The club will be delighted with that result as the team’s away form is appalling. One point from eleven PL away matches and a goal difference of 2-21 is hardly convincing.
The downward slide in their away form is quite astounding, considering they started their season by winning all three of their matches away from Vicarage Road!
The 3-1 defeat suffered in 2016 is Manchester United’s single loss of points to Watford since 1986 (W12, D0, L1)!
Players to watch: Mourinho has promised Anthony Martial a start here, and playing Watford may be just the kind of opportunity the Frenchman needs to get his scoring going again. He has scored in both of the latest fixtures between the clubs.
With three goals, Roberto Pereyra counts for 60% of all the ‘Hornets’ goals in their last eight league games.
Stat attack: United’s 18 games without conceding is the most in the league this season.
A single point form Watford’s last eleven PL away matches is the worst in the league.
Watford are among the league’s bad boys with four red cards this season, a ‘feat’ surpassed only by Leicester’s five.
