In their first World Cup (WC) for twelve years, Saudi Arabia’s presence in the finals is as surprising as Italy’s absence is shocking. While this friendly provides Italy’s next generation of stars a chance to flaunt their skills, Saudi Arabia will see it as a sharp learning curve – one which must be negotiated very quickly given what lies ahead.
The ‘Green Falcons’ (KSA) have the unenviable task of playing Russia in the opening match of the WC. With Saudi Arabian teams having fallen at the first hurdle in their last three WC finals appearances, getting some form ‘under their belt’ is important. While a match against Italy is a step up, KSA are going steady, having beaten Greece (2-0) and Algeria (2-0) earlier this month.
Despite this, the progress yet to be made by KSA was underlined by a 4-0 thrashing at the hands of Belgium back in March. Italy’s form gives less cause for encouragement, with their March friendlies yielding a loss to Argentina (0-2) and a draw against England (1-1).
The climate at St Gallen’s AFG arena will suit Italy better here, and this should ultimately be a stroll for the four-time world champions. The two nations have never met, and the last time KSA beat a team in the current (May 2018) FIFA rankings’ top 20 was way back in May 2002 (Uruguay, by a 3-2 scoreline).
Players to watch: Italy’s Lorenzo Insigne netted an equalising penalty at Wembley back in March, marking his first strike since a 5-0 demolition of Liechtenstein in June 2017.
Twenty-three-year-old Mohammed Kanu scored his first goal for the KSA senior international side in the 2-0 win over Greece earlier this month.
Stat attack: Italy are winless in four matches, representing the nation’s worst run since March 2016.
Each of Italy’s last seven matches have produced under 2.5 goals. That streak should end here if this one goes to expectations.
