South Korea will continue their World Cup (WC) auditions as they take on Bosnia-Herzegovina in an international friendly this week. This match is their last before announcing their WC squad, so the Korean players will be wanting to impress.
A 2-0 win over Honduras halted their two-match losing streak, but the hosts have a lot to ponder before ticking certain boxes. Injuries to a number of regulars has given coach Shin Tae-Yong a big headache, especially with a tough group featuring Germany, Mexico, and Sweden awaiting in Russia.
Qualifying was tricky too, as they ensured their passage only on the final day of the qualifiers. With games against Bolivia and Senegal left before their WC sojourn, Korea will hope to tie the loose ends up.
Bosnia looms as a good opponent, especially with the football-crazy nation trying to recover from the disastrous WC non-qualification. One loss in five friendlies (W1, D3, L1) is not a bad start, but just one win isn’t a great spark either.
The fact that they scored just one goal during these five friendlies puts a question mark on a side that is trying to build to qualify for the expanded 2020 Euros, under new coach Robert Prosinečki.
Players to watch: Former Barcelona product Lee Seung-Woo (KOR) will hope to prove his worth ahead of the final WC squad selection.
Edin Dzeko (BOS) had a fabulous season with Roma (16 goals), and will look to carry that form to national duty.
Stat attack: Both sides played in a 2006 friendly when Korea won 2-0.
Son Heung-Min is the top-scoring Asian in the history of the English Premier League (30 goals).
Every WC since 1986 has featured South Korea, but only twice in eight attempts have they managed to go beyond the group stage.
Bosnia have picked up four clean sheets in their last five friendlies.
