League 1 play-off winners Rotherham bounced straight back after relegation in 2017. They make the long journey from South Yorkshire to the English capital to face a Brentford team that looked like contenders for a play-off berth until the final month of last season.
It is as tough an opening draw as the Millers (Rotherham) could have dreaded. The club’s last game here ended in a 4-2 defeat (in February 2017), with Rotherham last taking all the points from Griffin Park back in October 2013. Overall, the club’s record at Griffin Park is: W8, D8, L13.
A 6-0 win over South London side Millwall (in 2002) is Rotherham’s last opening day victory on the road. Ironically, however, Rotherham United’s last ten league matches in London have seen the club return an appalling record of: W0, D2, L8.
August 2011 remains the last time a ‘Bees’ side opened with a win at home. The club’s last opening day home win in the second tier of English football came back in August 1953. Victory against Rotherham here would also mark Brentford’s first ever run of four straight home wins against the Yorkshire club.
Players to watch: As a defender, Brentford’s Nicholas Yennaris doesn’t get many opportunities to score, but he scored in the last H2H meeting here.
Revenge? That same match saw Rotherham striker Anthony Forde get the better of Yennaris, and pull the score back to 2-2 after 87 minutes, before Brentford’s brutal blast in injury time.
Stat attack: Brentford are without a clean sheet in four matches against Rotherham.
Against all opponents, four out of Brentford’s last five matches have seen both teams score.
The overall record shows that Rotherham have a slight edge, with a total historical record of: W25, D16, L21, against their hosts.
