Match Preview

After 22 years under Arsène Wenger, Arsenal will start the 2018/19 season under new coach Unai Emery when they take on champions Manchester City.
It’s been a summer of change at Arsenal, as the club look to change their fortunes on the pitch after last season’s sixth-place finish – the second-straight season finishing out of the Champions League reckoning. As part of that change, five new players have come in with an emphasis on defence.
Arsenal ended last season with the second best home record in the league (W15, D2, L2), although one of their two losses was a 3-0 reversal at the hands of City – a team they also lost 3-1 away to and 3-0 in the Carabao Cup final!
Unlike Arsenal, City have been relatively quiet in the transfer market and will mainly rely on the same set of players from last season that saw them become the first Premier League (PL) side to register 100-points in a season.
City come into this game after beating Chelsea 2-0 in the traditional Community Shield (CS) curtain raiser, and are on the back of a six-game PL winning streak away from home.
Players to watchSergio Agüero notched his 200th goal for City in last week’s CS and if he scores twice in this game, he will equal the record of eight goals in opening-round games.
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scored in his last three PL games and scored ten in total after his January transfer.
Stat attack: This will be Arsenal’s seventh-straight season with a season opener at home (!) and they haven’t always taken advantage (W2, D1, L3). Interestingly, the last two both ended in 4-3 scorelines.
City haven’t lost an opening game since 2008/09.
Emery faced City boss Pep Guardiola on ten occasions in La Liga but never won a game.
Arsenal’s last ten home PL games have all produced over 2.5 goals.
