Match Preview

UEFA’s brand new international tournament, the UEFA Nations League, pits Finland against Hungary in this Group Two, League C match in Tampere. With neither team represented in this summer’s World Cup (WC), it’s the first outing in three months for both.
Finland finished their WC qualification campaign on a positive note, going unbeaten in their last four matches – but were still far off from qualifying. Since then, they’ve played six international friendlies and had largely positive results (W4, D1, L1).
Having never secured a spot in the Euro finals, the home side will surely be egged on by the extra qualification possibility offered by this format. After strong results towards the end of the WC qualifiers (win against Iceland, draw against Croatia), there is an air of optimism in the north.
Hungary are ranked as the strongest side in League C, and anything but securing the group win would be considered a failure.
This will be the first match with new coach Marco Rossi in charge, who was recruited after a solid tenure with Slovakian side, Dunajská Streda (52% win rate).
Players to watch: English Championship-based striker Teemu Pukki has 12 goals in 63 international caps for Finland – more goals than the rest of the squad combined!
Ádám Szalai (46 caps, 15 goals), meanwhile, has started the Bundesliga season with three goals in the first two matches.
Stat attack: Hungary dominate the H2H history with eleven wins from 16 matches (D3, L2) and a combined goal score of 45-11.
Finland are unbeaten in six home games (W4, D2) and have scored 2+ goals in four of those.
Hungary beat Finland in the Euro 2016 qualifying play-off, and in the last four H2Hs there’s been 16 yellow cards awarded (4.0 on average).
There’s not been a 2+ goal win margin to either team in the last eight H2Hs.
