Match Preview

Two-time UEFA European Championship winners, France, and one-time winners, the Netherlands, face off at the Stade de France this Sunday, in this League A heavyweight clash of the 2018/19 UEFA Nations League.
Recently crowned world champions France were unable to win their first match following their World Cup (WC) glory, drawing away to Germany in the opening round (0-0). That result made Didier Deschamps’ men the sixth-straight world champions unable to win their first match following a WC win.
The Netherlands missed out on this summer’s WC, finishing third in their qualifying group behind France and Sweden. In their two qualifiers against France they failed to score a single goal, losing 1-0 at home, before succumbing 4-0 away.
However Ronald Koeman’s side have shown recent signs of promise, losing just one of their last seven friendly matches including an impressive 3-0 victory over Portugal (W4, D2, L1).
In 26 previous meetings across all competitions, France have a balanced record against the Netherlands of: W12, D4, L10. However, ‘Les Bleus’ have a much better H2H record in recent history, winning the last four encounters, scoring at least two goals in three of them.
Players to watch: French goalkeeper Alphonse Areola impressed against Germany as he earned his first cap, keeping his team in the game with some impressive saves late on.
Memphis Depay is in great form, scoring his nation’s two goals against Peru earlier this week (2-1).
Stat attack: The French are unbeaten in their last 12 games (W9, D3), their best streak since June 2012!
In four of the last five H2Hs, France were leading at half-time – in the one game they weren’t leading at half-time, they went on to lose.
The Netherlands have not recorded a single goalless draw in their last 53 games – the last one was back in November 2013 against Colombia.
