Match Preview

Southampton host Brighton in this Premier League (PL) encounter, with the two teams meeting for the 28th time (all comps.) and the visitors looking for their first win at St Mary’s since 2009.
The hosts come into this off an impressive 2-0 away victory at Crystal Palace before the international break, in an evenly fought game where Southampton showed a clinical touch. That win was their first of the season (W1, D1, L2), and home fans will hope their team takes some of that winning spirit into this clash.
While Brighton’s home fans got to witness a shock 3-2 victory over Manchester United last month, traveling fans have had little to cheer about. ‘The Seagulls’ have lost their first two on the road, albeit to star-studded Liverpool (1-0) and PL high-flyers Watford (2-0), meaning it’s the same-old problem for Brighton, who had the worst away record of any team in the PL last season (W2, D5, L12) – and haven’t won an away league fixture since November last year.
Coach Chris Hughton may be waiting a little longer to see an away win from his Brighton side however, as Southampton have lost just once to Brighton in the last five H2Hs at St Mary’s (W2, D2, L1).
Players to watch: Southampton’s summer signing Danny Ings has scored two goals in four PL games, while veteran Brighton forward Glenn Murray scored a brace in his last outing and got two goals against Southampton last season.
Stat attack: Both H2H games ended 1-1 last season, with each team managing just four shots on goal in total.
Hughton has only won once against Southampton in nine games (W1, D5, L3) during his managerial career.
This fixture’s referee, Anthony Taylor, has awarded more yellow cards (16) this season than any other official, an average of four per game.
