Galatasaray (W11, D6, L4 – domestic league) will be beaming with confidence having gone ten games unbeaten in all competitions and are six points off first place in their home league. Their last home defeat came in the Champions League (CL) after a 3-2 home loss to Benfica’s fellow Portuguese side, FC Porto. Both Galatasaray and Benfica qualified for the Europa League (EL) after finishing third in their respective CL groups.
That was their only competitive loss at home this season (W10, D6), yet ‘Cimbom’ (GAL) have only won two of their last 24 games in Europe. They are, however, just one win off 100 wins in all European competitions (D72, L106), and a win at this stage will take Gala to the last-16 of the EL for the first time since they were knocked out in 2008/09 by Hamburger SV (UEFA Cup).
Highly respected manager Fatih Terim won this competition with Gala in 2000 (UEFA Cup) and faces Benfica’s Bruno Lage whose career spans just 24 games (W16, D3, L5).
But with four losses on the road this season in all competitions, Benfica (away W13, D3, L4) were firmly beaten away to Bayern Munich (5-1) and Ajax (1-0) in the last rounds of the CL. Worse yet, the ‘Eagles’ have never won an away game in Europe against Turkish opposition (D4, L3).
However, two-time CL winners Benfica are more experienced in Europe and have drawn as nearly as many European Cup games as Gala have won (W197, D98, L128). However, these teams met in the 2015/16 Champions League campaign with the home team on the day winning 2-1 on both occasions.
Players to watch: Eren Derdiyok has ten goals in all competitions this season and scored in Gala’s last European home game.
Eight-goal Brazilian, Jonas (BEN), has nine goals in all competitions and was first goalscorer in Benfica’s 1-1 draw with Ajax.
Stat attack: Gala have kept seven home clean sheets this season from 17 games – with two coming in the CL.
Benfica have only failed to score in just three of their 20 away games this season – they’ve scored in four of their five CL awaydays.
Domestically, Gala games average 3.05 goals-per-game (SL) whereas Benfica games average 3.67 goals-per-game (PL).
