A 2-0 defeat at Hannover last time out spelled the end for Nuremberg boss Michael Köllner as his side slipped into last place. Managerless and on a 15-game winless Bundesliga run, the Bavarians now welcome leaders Borussia Dortmund who put seven past them in September’s reverse fixture.
Consistently conceding the opener has been a significant problem, and Nuremberg have now gone 1-0 down in 12 consecutive top-flight fixtures – a Bundesliga record. In only three of those games did they rescue a point. Their only two top-flight victories this season have come at home however (W2, D4, L5), both were the only times Nuremberg netted over 1.5 team goals here.
Dortmund have let a nine-point gap between themselves and Bayern Munich dissipate to just two points. This game will therefore be seen as a must win, and having lost just one Bundesliga away outing this season (W6, D3, L1), victory will be expected.
The league top scorers (54 goals) have shown their talent up front, yet they’ve also conceded six goals over their last two competitive matches, including squandering a 3-0 lead at home to Hoffenheim in their previous Bundesliga fixture (3-3).
Players to watch: Hanno Behrens netted in Nuremberg’s last Bundesliga victory – his three league goals were all scored before half-time and were his team’s first of the game.
Dortmund have won just one of the three games in 2019 that top-scorer Marco Reus missed due to injury (W1, D1, L1). He’s out for this one, so starlet Jadon Sancho (seven goals, nine assists) will likely be heavily relied on.
Stat attack: Only one of Nuremberg’s 11 home league fixtures featured over 1.5 first-half goals.
Dortmund’s 25 yellow cards this term (1.19 per match average) is the Bundesliga’s lowest tally.
There’s been exactly two match goals scored in the last four Bundesliga H2Hs held here.
