Eintracht Frankfurt returned to Germany from their 4-2 first-leg loss at Benfica only to taste defeat to Bundesliga relegation candidates Augsburg (1-3). However if one thing is likely in this game it’s goals – from the combined total of both Frankfurt’s, and Benfica’s, last three competitive games, there’s been an average of 5.0 total match goals per fixture.
The German ‘Eagles will still hold hope of progression, given their unbeaten record this season in the competition until last week (W8, D2, L1). Notably, Frankfurt have scored 14 goals in five EL home games this term (2.8 per match average).
The hosts were eliminated on away goals in their only previous EL pairing vs Portuguese opponents (5-5 vs Porto). Meanwhile, Benfica have a record of: W14, D14, L19 against German opposition in UEFA competition, although just two of those victories came in Germany.
Benfica have lost just one of 14 UEFA-sanctioned two-legged ties after earning a two-goal first-leg advantage in Lisbon. However that sole defeat did come against Vorwärts in 1970/71, a team from the similarly named Frankfurt an der Oder in eastern Germany – a bad omen perhaps?
Benfica appear at this stage for a record fifth time. They progressed from each of the last three, despite winning just one of the away legs across their four prior appearances (W1, D2, L1).
Players to watch: Frankfurt’s Luka Jović is on a two-year loan from Benfica, although that didn’t stop him scoring against his parent club. Meanwhile in the first leg, 19-year-old João Félix (BEN) became the youngest player to score an EL hat-trick.
Stat attack: Frankfurt are the EL’s worst-disciplined side this year (26 yellow, three red: 2.64 cards per match average).
There’s been a red card shown in each of Frankfurt’s last three competitive matches.
Six of Benfica’s last eight competitive away games produced over 2.5 goals.
