Lecce – Verona Predictions and Preview

  • Just how congested it is towards the bottom of Serie A is illustrated by Lecce and Hellas Verona being separated by two points but four places after matchday 27. Lecce are in the stronger position, but they won’t be for much longer unless they snap a four-match winless run in the league (D1, L3) during which they scored just once, with all three of those defeats coming ‘to nil’.
  • It’s been a similar story against Verona, as the Giallorossi have lost both of the last two H2Hs 1-0 by conceding after the 70th minute. While that’s an area that manager Roberto D’Aversa may well focus on, striking late has also been an area of strength this season at home, where they’ve netted 73% of their second-half goals (eight) after the 75th minute!
  • Knowing that a third consecutive win at this ground will move them ahead of their hosts, Verona have plenty of incentive to build on their 1-0 win over fellow bottom-half side Sassuolo last Sunday. After their first Serie A victory in seven attempts (D3, L3), manager Marco Baroni praised his players for their “mental and physical stability”.
  • He’ll be asking for more of the same as the Gialloblu make the lengthy trip south to face a team he played for between 1987 and 1989, and managed before heading to Verona last year. Making a case for them winning here is mostly based on those recent H2H wins because they haven’t won an away league game since beating Empoli 1-0 in their first such match of the campaign (D3, L10 since)!
  • Key battle: If Lecce are to net late again, then Roberto Piccoli could be a threat as three of his four league goals this term arrived after the 80th minute. Trying to stop him will be centre-back Diego Coppola, who scored against Napoli last month but has also picked up four bookings across his last six league appearances.
  • Hot stat: Only Cagliari and Salernitana had scored fewer first-half home goals this Serie A campaign than Lecce (four) after matchday 27.
